The experience gained with difficult-to-handle powdered products such as Aerosil, carbon black, glass microspheres and bentonite prompted O+B to develop an R&amp;D project focused on creating a specific solution for this application: the vacuum loading system for powdered raw materials, called <\/span><b>DISPERVAC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>DISPERVAC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> solves the problem of loading raw materials that are difficult to handle due to their volatility, dirtiness, contaminating characteristics or health risks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several chemical industry machinery manufacturers have been introducing inline mixing systems to the market for years for the incorporation of powdered raw materials into dispersion processes. With the aim of offering a robust and competitive alternative, Oliver &amp; Batlle developed the <\/span><b>DISPERVAC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> system, which combines vacuum feeding of solids with the <\/span><b>Polimix<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dispersion system, achieving a highly efficient, safe, and versatile solution. After analysing the various processes available on the market, we believe our <\/span><b>DISPERVAC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> technology is also particularly interesting for incorporating pigments such as titanium dioxide (TiO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), which is widely used in the paint industry for its hiding power and colorimetric performance but is difficult to handle and expensive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the next article, we will present some ideas that will support the promotion and use of the <\/span><b>DISPERVAC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> system, which we hope will be of interest to you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><b>Advantages of vacuum loading of powdered products with the DISPERVAC system in paint and ink manufacturing<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nowadays, pigment cost is one of the most significant factors in the manufacturing of paints and inks. Reducing pigment usage can represent a considerable cost savings and improve overall process profitability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most widely used pigments is <\/span><b>titanium dioxide (TiO?)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a costly and difficult-to-handle material. Depending on the formulation, it can suppose for 25% to 40% of the total production cost. There has long been ongoing discussion around the possibility of classifying TiO? as a carcinogenic substance, which could eventually lead to regulations restricting its use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In anticipation of such a scenario, <\/span><b>Oliver + Batlle <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has developed a vacuum powder loading system compatible with dispersion machines, designed to streamline the handling of powdered pigments and facilitate their safe and efficient incorporation into the production process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vacuum loading of powdered pigments in paint and ink manufacturing offers major advantages, especially for dispersing pigments such as TiO?:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Enhances the colorimetric strength<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the pigments.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<b><\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Allows for reduced pigment usage<\/b>, as air-free dispersions ensure better particle distribution and more efficient processing, avoiding the \u201cairbag effect\u201d caused by excess air.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><b>DISPERVAC: An ultra-efficient vacuum dispersion method<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The DISPERVAC system consists of two main units:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>powder handling and transfer system<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, equipped with vacuum technology.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>production unit<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> based on coaxial conical dispersion technology, specifically designed to operate under vacuum conditions.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vacuum handling system is particularly suitable for <\/span><b>highly volatile or fine powders<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as aluminum silicates or glass microspheres, as well as for various pigments and fillers like TiO?, calcium carbonate, talc, or silica. For maximum dispersion efficiency, we recommend using a <\/span><b>Polimix<\/b> <b>vessel<\/b> <b>of conical trunk form<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> equipped with <\/span><b>two coaxial agitation systems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>dispersing unit<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with one or two turbines featuring lift\/lower mechanisms.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><b>anchor-type homogenizer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with flexible wall scrapers to ensure optimal mixing.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These machines are highly efficient in dispersion processes, since vacuum loading takes place <\/span><b>from the bottom of the vessel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, enabling immediate incorporation of pigments into the liquid flow generated by the dispersion turbine. This avoids pigment floating or surface accumulation, which is common in top-loading systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conical shape <\/span><b>conduces the powders directly into the primary turbine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, allowing the process to begin with a <\/span><b>minimal amount of liquid<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When using an appropriate dispersant\u2014in both type and quality\u2014excellent dispersion results are achieved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>DISPERVAC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> system allows the handling of powdered products by vacuum, completely avoiding dust emissions during loading and associated material losses. It is particularly suitable for <\/span><b>low-density products<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or those requiring <\/span><b>special handling conditions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to health hazards for plant operators\u2014such as TiO?.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vacuum suction system can be <\/span><b>fully programmed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, allowing pigments to be introduced into the formulation at a controlled and repeatable feed rate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The adition of pigments in paint and ink manufacturing is a critical and sometimes complex operation. With the <\/span><b>programmable DISPERVAC system<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a precise and repeatable process is guaranteed, enabling the optimal incorporation of pigments <\/span><b>free from entrapped air<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This air-free dispersion improves pigment performance, increases color strength, and reduces raw material costs in formulations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>What kind of manufacturing equipment is used in a DISPERVAC installation?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using dispersers equipped with <\/span><b>saw-tooth turbines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><b>HDM-type turbines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as traditionally done, remains an effective method\u2014especially when operating with tanks whose geometry enhances turbine efficiency, such as <\/span><b>trunk conical shapes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This geometry allows the dispersion phase to begin with <\/span><b>minimal liquid volume<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, increasing the effectiveness of the turbines. In large-capacity machines, a small turbine can be placed at the bottom and a second, larger one in an intermediate position. Even when both turbines operate simultaneously, the required installed power does not need to be high.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Comparing the DISPERVAC system with inline mixing processes<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inline vacuum dispersion systems promoted in the market often claim the advantage of <\/span><b>lower installed power<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, this argument must be linked to the <\/span><b>speed of the dispersion process<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To achieve faster dispersion times than a traditional disperser\u2014and to ensure sufficient suction capacity for powdered pigments\u2014<\/span><b>inline mixers must operate at very high speeds<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which in turn <\/span><b>requires high power consumption<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (according to available technical data, some machines reach up to 110?kW).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, inline mixers require a <\/span><b>recirculation and homogenization tank<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which also needs to be equipped with an agitator. The required power for this agitator depends on the batch volume. In total, the <\/span><b>combined power requirement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of an inline system often exceeds that of a <\/span><b>Polimix coaxial trunk conical disperser<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another often-overlooked challenge in inline dispersion systems is the <\/span><b>temperature rise<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> within the dispersion chamber. When vacuum loading is applied, a small amount of air is introduced to help transport the powder into the disperser.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, <\/span><b>saw-tooth turbine dispersers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tend to incorporate small amounts of air during the shearing process. While the presence of air at certain points during pigment dispersion can <\/span><b>aid in wetting the pigment particle surfaces<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it can become problematic later in the process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excess air at the end of production may lead to <\/span><b>volume instability<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><b>air bubbles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> appearing during application. With the DISPERVAC system, <\/span><b>these issues are eliminated<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as the same vacuum system used for loading can also extract residual air from the final product.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><b>air-free production process<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ensures a more uniform particle distribution and <\/span><b>prevents foaming or bubble formation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during paint or ink application. In printing inks, the removal of air <\/span><b>enhances gloss and visual performance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foam caused by air entrapment in conventional dispersion processes is often corrected by adding <\/span><b>defoamers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, manufacturing with DISPERVAC allows for <\/span><b>vacuum-based air extraction<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, significantly reducing\u2014or even eliminating\u2014the need for antifoaming agents and consequently lowering formulation costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Pigment and filler incorporation with the DISPERVAC system<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a traditional water-based decorative paint manufacturing process using cylindrical tanks, the dispersion of TiO? usually starts with <\/span><b>the maximum amount of liquid possible<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to create a large enough volume for powder incorporation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In contrast, the <\/span><b>DISPERVAC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> installation, which uses <\/span><b>trunk<\/b> <b>conical-shaped dispersers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, allows for a different strategy: <\/span><b>taking advantage of the conical bottom to work with the minimum required liquid volume<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, enabling TiO? to be dispersed more efficiently, achieving <\/span><b>better particle size distribution<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>higher color development<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a second phase, more liquid is added, followed by the fillers. This <\/span><b>two-step sequence<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with varying amounts of wetting liquid, <\/span><b>optimizes the tinting strength<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of TiO?.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This sequence can be easily executed using the <\/span><b>DISPERVAC control system<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, allowing for fully programmable stages. By dispersing TiO? first, improved final product quality and reduced TiO? consumption are achieved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Manufacturing of TiO? slurries and intermediate products<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>DISPERVAC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> system is effective for producing high-quality slurries. The programmable vacuum powder charging system ensures optimal product quality and excellent traceability throughout the manufacturing process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The continuous slurry manufacturing system can be replaced by a <\/span><b>DISPERVAC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> process using high-capacity dispersing equipment, enabling the production of up to 24 tons of slurry per single formulation.
